How to ask for clarity without pressure or games

Why the question feels dangerous
Asking makes the answer real. Ambiguity at least preserves hope. But ambiguity also costs weeks of your attention, and it rarely resolves on its own.
What a good clarity question looks like
- It states your own position first, honestly
- It asks about their wants, not about your worth
- It gives them room to say something you will not like
- It happens once, not every week
Example: "I like where this is going and I'd rather know what you're looking for than guess. No pressure to have it all figured out."
What to avoid
Ultimatums, tests, strategic distance, and jealousy plays. They may produce a reaction, but the reaction is about the tactic, not about you — so it tells you nothing.
Reading the answer
A clear answer, even a disappointing one, is a gift. A non-answer repeated twice is also an answer. Believe the pattern over the reassurance.
