Mixed signals: how to make sense of them

Mixed signals are not a code to crack. Most of the time they are an accurate picture of someone who is genuinely mixed — interested and unavailable, attracted and unsure, comfortable and unwilling to commit. The inconsistency is the message.

Why people send mixed signals

Rarely because they are running a strategy. Far more often because two true things are competing inside them at once.

  • They enjoy you but do not want a relationship right now
  • They are still attached to someone else
  • They avoid closeness when it starts to feel real
  • They are keeping options open without saying so
  • Their life circumstances swing week to week

The pattern matters more than the peaks

When you look back, you probably remember the best moments most vividly — that is how intermittent reinforcement works. Judge the situation by the average, not by the high points. If you plotted the last two months, would the line be climbing, flat, or sawtoothed?

What actually helps

Not decoding harder. Usually a plain, non-accusatory question about what they want, and then believing the answer — including the answer given by their behaviour over the following weeks.
