Mixed signals: a practical framework for making sense of them

Editorial team · 8/28/2026

Mixed signals are not a puzzle to solve

They are usually an accurate description of someone's internal state. A person can genuinely enjoy you and genuinely not want a relationship. Both signals are true at once, which is exactly why decoding fails.

Separate the three layers

  • What was said and done, exactly
  • The pattern those actions form over weeks
  • The meaning you are adding

Most confusion comes from mixing layer three into layer one and treating the result as evidence.

The consistency test

Look for what stays the same when circumstances change. Does contact survive a busy week? Do plans survive a cancellation? Consistency under mild friction is a stronger signal than intensity on a good night.

When to stop analyzing

If you have been trying to interpret the same behaviour for more than a couple of weeks, interpretation is no longer the bottleneck. A direct question — "I'm enjoying this, and I'm not sure what you want it to be" — gets you further than another read of the messages.
